8/14/00 Beautiful blue sky as we head East on Hwy 54. Lots of traffic out and about. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, you name it, it's on Hwy 54 today. The ponds are all full and sparkling a beautiful blue. We've gotten so much wonderful rain, it's very unusual, but very nice to see green trees, lush green grass and wildflowers in August in Missouri! Sign says 7 miles to Junction of Hwy 17 for Eugene. Lots of advertising signs for the November elections. Vote for ME! They all want the same thing. Big round bales of hay in a field on the right. Antler's International on the left. Still need to stop by and visit with these folks. They have an exotic animal auction once a month. See the sign, we're leaving Miller and crossing over into Cole County. Off on Hwy 17 to turn left beside the Total station. On down the old highway to visit with Lloyd Boyd at Aged to Perfection. He had a few customers come in while we were there, of course, they got a JCAD brochure from me! Darlin' and I got to sit in his beautiful, expensive chairs and have a nice, long visit with Lloyd. We enjoy hearing about his school superintendent days. I think he misses all the young people. He's quite the thoughtful man. Wish him and Dennis the best of luck in the future! Home the back way to get busy on updates and information! Ya'll be careful out on the highways! We want you to have a fun, safe trip and come back again to travel the back way with us real soon! 8/27/00 Beautiful dark blue clouds as we head East on Hwy 54 up to Hwy 87. Turned North on 87 and stopped to get a soda and pass out JCAD brochures about half way between Eldon and California. Not sure the name of this convenience store or community. Loved to see all the folks in the store reading their JCAD brochure! On down the road towards California. It's neat looking, the hedge apples are glowing, all the flower beds are just beautiful. Yellows and reds and the soybeans are such a dark green they're almost blue! Looks like they are almost done. Everything got a good drink last night. It's hard to believe but we've gotten 30 inches of rain so far this year. It's the most I've ever seen in 25 years of Missouri living. All the yards are such a pretty green and all have been mowed. Beautiful flower beds on the left. Before we got to F Highway, Darlin' pointed to the right to show me a wild turkey that was walking around down by the pond. Crossed Moreau Creek, lots of traffic out. A green truck ahead of us turned around in the Burgers Smokehouse driveway. Yep, it's Sunday and they're closed. Into the town of California, pop. 3,465. Town has so many flower beds that sure are pretty. Looks nice. Turned left onto Hwy 50. What happened to the road?? The blacktop has been dug out about 6 inches deep. Luckily, it went back to normal as we got out of town. Big corn patches and oh no! A big thistle patch on the right. There is a windmill, but it's perfectly still this morning. See the blue water tower for the city of Tipton, pop. 2,206. We don't travel Hwy 50 very often. The same water tower has a faint picture of a red cardinal we could see as we got closer. See the tall steeple of St. Andrew Catholic Church. Drove through town, we lucked out as the one light in town was green. A HUGE 8 ball is on the right, they have painted the other water tower to be an 8 ball. So unusual! Into the town of Syracuse, pop. 185. There is a graveyard on the left and a mill on the right. Gasoline is $1.37 here. We stayed on Hwy 50 West as 5 North goes towards Boonville. We'll see them later! Heading to Sedalia and the sign says 19 miles until we get there. Big fields of wheat, fescue, soybeans and corn. All so lush and green. I love it. Crossed the bridge for Lamine River. Seeing baby blue skies and whisps of white clouds, still in the 70's, a really nice time to be out and about. Hwy 50 is really bumpy. Lots of motorcycles are out today enjoying the weather and we even saw 1 guy in lime green on a bicycle. On into the town of Sedalia, pop. 19,800. Had a GREAT time at the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 125 for a meeting and lunch. Thanks folks! So good to see ya'll again! Had JCAD business to take care of, so we headed out of town on Hwy 50, later in the day now, very hot and crazy, too much traffic. Got out the map to find us a nice, calm back way. Turned onto Hwy 135 North, ahhhh, no one but us and the butterflies. Now that's the Back Way! Through the Community of Pleasant Green and into the community of Pilot Grove, pop. 714. Bank sign is flashing 93 degrees at 1:57 p.m. We still have the beautiful blue skies but everything is mighty dry looking in Martinsville. Took the outer road to the right, Route 40, towards Boonville. Sorry to say that all is not well at the Hy-Way 5 Antique Mall, have never been talked to so badly before in my life by BOTH owners, Joe and Stephanie. Will NOT be treated that way again. After working with these folks for 3 years, they are OUT of JCAD. All I can say is, beware. 8/28/00 Out and about early, such a beautiful day out as we head East on Hwy 54. Stopped to get gasoline at the Jct. 87, and now we're off towards California. Saw a woodworking shop we had stopped at a few years ago. They are open early, so we stopped in to visit with Greg at the Baer Brothers Woodworking Shop. They do furniture designs and restoration and refinishing of antiques. A great shop! Stop by and see their work when you are in town! They can be found at 106 Dahler, right downtown. Nice folks! Taking a new back way today, turned onto Hwy O North, such pretty farms, can hear the frogs croaking, all this under beautiful blue skies! Turned right onto D Hwy. What a VIEW! The walnut trees are full of nuts, a good year! Watching the sky, quite the front moving in, from here you can see for miles and miles! Have seen several turtle doves and little sparrows. The air temperature is at least 10 degrees cooler here. How wonderful! Crossing Moniteau Creek, see lush green corn fields on both sides of the road. They have a water gauge by the road, the water level must rise quickly when it rains. Old, old houses, one white house on the left has 2 front doors, side by side. Years ago, one door was used for family, one for company! Tall, skinny red and white tower on the left. A gray squirrel ran across the road in front of us. Lots of curves, now we're seeing many barn swallows diving and flying about. Bright yellow patches of flowers fill the ditches. Entering into Cooper County. All the big corn patches have a sign for Pioneer Seed. Took a left onto Hwy 87, this runs into Prarie Home, pop, 215. Took care of business and passed out many JCAD brochures. Onto down into Jamestown, pop, 298. Stayed on Hwy 179, and two box turtles are in the road ahead of us. Have the Missouri River off thru the holler on the left. Lots of cattle trucks and trailers with hogs and cows. Must be a sale this morning. The view at Chapel Road is gorgeous. Green, freshly cut fields of hay, stands of dark green hardwood trees, wheat, fescue and many, many farms. A white house on the right has a porch ALL the way around. Now that's a porch! :) See a Christmas tree farm on the left, hey, we've been here before! Yep, we're into the community of Sandy Hook and it's looking good! Crossed the Moniteau Creek again. Remember years ago, all this area had trouble with the flood waters, most has been restored. Entering Cole County, a green van passed us on the bridge, they're from Florida. Hope they copied the URL from the tailgate, as there is no way we can catch them to give them a brochure! They're in a hurry! There is an old iron bridge off to the left! So much to see! Turned right onto N Highway. Saw a hummingbird sitting on the top strand of the barbwire fence! Went forward on NN Highway. There is a cane press on the left and long haired angora goats and the sign says Osage Springs! What a hill we've been climbing! Can't see behind us it's so far down! Darlin' had to shift the Toy into 3rd gear. On down into the town of Centertown, pop. 356. Stopped to pass out JCAD brochures. Turned left to go East on Hwy 50 towards Jeff City in search of new antique stores. Into St. Martins, pop. 717. Stopped at a convenience store to pass out brochures and refill our cup with more ice and water! Passed AAA Storage and Westend Flea Market and had to turn around and go back. Had a nice visit with Rex, hope he gives his wife Paula one of our brochures so she can e-mail us. Nice, used furniture at reasonable prices. We'll be back! Going the back way into Apache Flats. Came to Frenchie's Antique Mall and got to visit with Jean, the owner. Nice new mall, clean, well lit and aisles wide enough for wheelchairs. Come on by and tell 'em JCAD sent ya! Come hungry, too, as Frenchie's Cafe is serving GREAT food everyday! We've met the chef years ago, so good to see him again! Now it's extremely hot outside, on into Jeff, went by Mel's Country Cafe, but they are closed on Mondays. Stopped by the Butcher Shop with no name and got some excellent pastrami. Home to feast with Marty! Ya'll be sure to take gallons of water, I'm not kidding and keep a cooler full of ice as you travel the back way. Be safe! |
